UrgoStart’s NICE recommendation is renewed

In January 2019 the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) recommended UrgoStart, with its patented TLC-NOSF technology, for the treatment of diabetic foot ulcers and venous leg ulcers1.

In the latest update of this guidance, April 2023, NICE continues to make this recommendation2 stating that “UrgoStart is recommended as a cost saving option to treat diabetic foot ulcers and venous leg ulcers.

NICE have stated in the latest guidance that they made these recommendations because; UrgoStart is a range of dressings which can improve wound healing for diabetic foot ulcers and improve the rate of wound healing for venous leg ulcers. Cost modelling shows that UrgoStart is cost saving compared with standard care dressings in these groups. UrgoStart should therefore be considered as an option for people with diabetic foot ulcers or venous leg ulcers after any modifiable factors such as infection have been treated.”

The full NICE guidance report is available to read here along with an adoption support resource3 and a resource impact report4 and template5.

The adoption support resource, which is complementary to the guidance, provides practical information and advice to help with adoption of UrgoStart into clinical practice. It highlights benefits such as improving patient outcomes in terms of wound healing and quality of life, ease of use and long-term cost savings4.

The resource impact report and template help to estimate the cost savings that could be achieved by adopting UrgoStart locally.

Further information on the UrgoStart range itself can be found on the product pages of this website.

Still Made in Britain

At Urgo Medical we’re proud to be part of the long history of textile manufacturing in the UK, manufacturing our AltiMed compression hosiery range and components of our bandaging systems in Shepshed, Leicestershire.

As a global business, it’s important to us that we support the communities that our products are sold in, and this is why we take pride in continuing to manufacture in the UK. Alongside providing skilled jobs in the local community, and reducing transportation costs, manufacturing in the UK means that we can better support our amazing clinicians and their patients. As well as standard sizes, we offer made-to-measure garments. All made with care by our team in Shepshed, made-to-measure orders are shipped within 72 hours of receiving the order, meaning patients can get the care they need as quickly as possible.

Our factory in Shepshed has been making hosiery since 1928. By the late 2000s, the AltiMed compression hosiery range included British Standard hosiery, hosiery kits for the treatment of venous leg ulcers and European Class garments. In 2010, AltiMed was acquired by Urgo Medical, adding the compression hosiery range to the already successful bandage range and both are still British-made in the same factory today.

All this means we are proud to continue to display the Made in Britain mark as registered members of Made in Britain.

Measure & Go is our new digital tool, making it easy to choose measure and order the most effective Urgo Medical compression hosiery for your patients. Whether you’re looking to find ready-to-wear compression product, or order a made-to-measure garment, Measure & Go can help.

Urgo Medical UK & Ireland are proud to stand with Ukraine

At Urgo Medical, we know that our dressings and compression solutions can transform the lives of patients through healing. So when we heard about the efforts of Veteran’s Army, a UK not-for-profit who have worked tirelessly over the past few weeks to coordinate supplies and resources to be sent from the UK to Ukraine, we wanted to ensure that they had the supplies they needed to make a difference to those in desperate need.

Veteran’s Army are running Operation Nadeja, which works to support Project Nadiya, a volunteer-based private initiative to send resources to a warehouse situated at the Ukrainian border with Slovakia. From this warehouse, medical supplies are sent to field hospitals to help make a difference to those injured in the conflict, and critical aid supplies are sent to the cities of Kyiv, Odesa and Dnipro, among others. In the 5 weeks since Operation Nadeja began, Veteran’s Army have sourced, packed and transported over £400,000 worth of medical supplies and equipment. Urgo Medical UK & Ireland are very proud to be part of this effort!

2021 Looking back at our events

image00004

In a difficult year, we have been fortunate enough to have hosted and attended some fantastic events and conferences, reuniting with clinicians and colleagues, as well as getting to know new faces!

National Events: Wounds UK 2021

Wounds UK 2021 in November is the largest event we attended last year. As well as our main stand (complete with healing garden and barista), we had a secondary hosiery stand (known as the ‘shed’!) to showcase our new Measure&Go app. We were also proud to host two symposiums and two ‘Made Easy’ sessions!

Speaking to over 120 delegates across the three day conference and having some brilliant conversations about returning patients to healing was great for our team – and our clinicians had a fantastic time too!

“I was so grateful to have the opportunity to attend the Wounds UK conference in Harrogate this year. I really enjoyed networking with like-minded wound-a-holics and lympho-maniacs! To attend real life presentations after the crazy COVID world we have been living in and continue to live in was a real treat. It was great to visit the Urgo stand and understand more about effective treatments for leg ulcers. Friendly staff and the best coffee too! Thank you all at Urgo.”

“I had such a positive experience at my first Wounds UK conference. It has been a tough couple of years and morale has been low but this really lifted my spirits.”

Local Events: Pathway Picnics

For one of our teams, supporting local nurses in the launching of a leg ulcer pathway was a priority this year. However, we understand that clinicians’ time is precious, and in a busy year wanted to help our nurses to take a break too. Pathway Picnics were a resounding success in combining these needs!

Our team would set up camp in a local park, with a takeaway lunch for nurses and some useful materials to hand out, ready to offer help and support with the pathway launch.

“I really like that Urgo are trying something different and caring about nurses.”

“It’s important that nurses think about their mental health and wellbeing, and take a break”

“Really nice that you are trying to see nurses in a safe and respectful way.”

Virtual Events: Urgo Academy Northern Ireland

Our Northern Ireland team led a successful series of virtual academies for nurses focusing on when and where to use Urgo healing solutions to provide the best results for patients. Over 100 nurses attended each session, earning CPD certificates to include in their professional portfolios.

“Many thanks for the online study session this evening – it was very informative and delivered with a very ‘common sense’ approach which is very helpful for me in the treatment room setting.”

“Another great presentation last night! Let’s arrange a Lunch and Learn for a demo on UrgoKTwo sometime soon.”

“Please sign me up for the next session! I am thoroughly enjoying the sessions so far, I feel like I’ve learned so much.”

Great results with UrgoClean!  Session helped me work out where and when to use it.”

“I have been working as a nurse over 40 years. I love wound care and update my knowledge and skill as often as have an opportunity. The past year I had a privilege to attend online trainings from Urgo Medical, many sessions through the year. Each session given me new knowledge, updated my previous experience. I was on the way to leave community from many reasons, but since I started using Urgo products, I achieved extraordinary results in wound healing. That keeps me working for my lovely patients in the community as they deserve the best care. To see people relieved from pain and see their happy faces is my prize. But I would not be able to get this without Urgo products.”

Urgo Medical are looking forward to hosting and attending a range of events throughout 2022. Visit our events calendar to find events local to you. We’re looking forward to seeing you!

“The business skills course gave me the skills and knowledge to create a successful business case for two additional staff members.”

“A valuable course with so many transferable skills, I would recommend this to both new and experienced Tissue Viability Nurses.”

“I began the course thinking I knew a lot, managed to realise I didn’t know much and then learned loads! A great group, excellent and interested tutors, a varied curriculum, and I have made friends for life with the group members. I grew as a clinician in knowledge, confidence and desire to make my role even more productive. I now have the skills to do exactly that!”
